Satellite monitoring of the saffron-cowled blackbird in El Potrero Reserve

As part of the 2025 campaign by the Guardians of the Saffron-cowled Blackbird Colony, new technology was introduced to deepen knowledge about the movements of this endangered species outside the breeding season.

Some individuals were equipped with satellite transmitters that allow their use of the territory to be recorded. During the month of January, the receiver designed to capture these signals was installed in different areas of the El Potrero Reserve, where the reserve team began working with this tool and recording the first data.

This project, unique in the Gualeguaychú area, is led by Aves Argentinas and CONICET, together with the Saffron-cowled Blackbird Working Group, of which the El Potrero Reserve is a member.

Each signal recorded represents a new contribution to knowledge about the species and opens an important stage for its protection in southern Entre Ríos.
