Part of Nicolás García Uriburu’s archive is now part of MoMA’s collection

A selection of material from Nicolás García Uriburu’s archive is now part of the collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, where it will be available to researchers, curators, and the public from around the world.

The inclusion of this material is the result of a process that began in 2017, when the survey and cataloging of Nicolás García Uriburu’s work and archive began in collaboration with Claudio Aló and Andrés Terán—friends and family members—and Catalina Fabbri.

In the early stages, Esperanza and Milagros Pereda assisted with the digitization and research of the professional portfolios that Nicolás himself had compiled. This work provided an in-depth understanding of the material comprising the archive and laid the groundwork for a process that, over time, expanded and became more professional.

In 2021, Cintia Mezza began contributing to this professionalization process, working on cataloging and digitizing the archive in collaboration with the Bunge y Born Foundation, as well as on developing its platform on CollectiveAccess.

This journey has also been made possible thanks to the work of Azul García Uriburu, who continues and expands Nicolás’s legacy, and Azul Pereda, who currently directs Utopía del Sur.

The arrival of a selection of this material at MoMA represents a new step in the process of preserving, organizing, and circulating the archive, and allows part of this heritage to be accessed by researchers, curators, and an international audience.

As Nicolás García Uriburu wrote: “Today, communications bring us together, and the world is informed and globalized. I like to think in terms of bringing people together.”

Special thanks to Juampi Queiroz for his generosity and for making this event possible.
