The two gray brocket deer that have been in quarantine at El Potrero Reserve for the past few months have now been moved to the pre-release enclosure, a key stage before their final release.
This 10-hectare area of natural habitat allows them to gradually adapt to life in the wild. There, they regain the behaviors and instincts characteristic of their species, which are essential for increasing their chances of survival once they return to the wild.
Many of the deers that arrive at the reserve come from pet ownership and exhibit varying degrees of imprinting on humans. For this reason, this adaptation process is essential: we aim to help them return to behaving like true wild animals.
These are the same two deers that, in May, underwent a comprehensive health checkup and behavioral assessment, with very encouraging results. Today, these positive results allow us to take another step forward on their journey toward freedom.
Every transfer, every observation, and every decision is part of a patient and careful effort aimed at giving them the best chance to live freely once again.
We continue working to strengthen gray brocket populations and contribute to the conservation of this species in our region.
